This PhD school
in Copenhagen will give PhD students and other interested researchers a state-of-the-art introduction to a number of recent exciting topics in gravity and string theory with a particular focus on entanglement entropy and applications of holography. The course is intended for PhD students and other researchers working in theoretical high energy physics, cosmology and mathematics, but some of the courses (see below) may also be interesting for those working in the area of theoretical condensed matter physics. The school is organized by the Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology Group
and will be held at the Niels Bohr Institute
in Copenhagen. The course is also an event of the DFG school Models of Gravity
The deadline for registration is September 14
. Participation in the school is free. For participants coming from outside Copenhagen there may be support available for local accommodation. For those wishing to be considered for support, there is an earlier deadline August 31
. Those that cannot be supported, or do not need support, can find information on affordable accommodation possibilities on this page
Alejandra Castro (University of Amsterdam): 3D Quantum Gravity: A Survey on Non-Perturbative and Non-Local Effects
Jelle Hartong (Université Libre de Bruxelles): Newton-Cartan Geometry in Holography and Condensed Matter Theory
Tadashi Takayanagi (Kyoto University & IPMU): Entanglement Entropy and Holography
For abstracts of the lectures see the Scientific Programme page in the menu. See also the timetable (subject to minor changes).
On each day there will be one 2-hour morning lecture and one 2-hour afternoon lecture. The 2-hour lectures are divided into two blocks of 50 minutes with a 20 minute coffee break in between. This will provide an extra opportunity for lecturers and students to interact. Further on three afternoons there will be 1-hour exercise sessions.
A dinner for all participants will be organized on Tuesday evening; details TBA.
Guided tour of the NBI
We will organize a guided tour of the Niels Bohr Institute during which you will hear about the works and life of Niels Bohr and his contemporaries. The tour starts at the reception and will be given by Felicity Pors from the Niels Bohr Archive
This PhD school is funded by the Faculty of Science
of the University of Copenhagen, the Rosenfeld Foundation, the Niels Bohr Fund, and the Niels Bohr International Academy.
