CompSchool 2009

Summer School on Stellar Collapse, Compact Objects, Supernovae, and Gamma-Ray Bursts

at the Niels Bohr International Academy

August 17 - 21, 2009

The school will provide an up-to-date account of the physics of stellar collapse, compact objects, supernovae, and gamma-ray bursts at a level appropriate for graduate students and fresh postdocs. The material to be presented will cover the observational and theoretical background, describing the various situations in which compact objects play an important role. A second theme of the school will be the microscopic physics of importance for understanding the phenomena, as well as an introduction to the numerical simulation of astrophysical events. Among the important topics will be the equation of state of hot dense matter and the properties and interactions of neutrinos at high densities.

Prospective participants are kindly asked to register. As part of the registration process, we ask for a short statement of research interests and a 1-page curriculum vitae. Also, a short letter of support from an academic advisor should be sent via e-mail to compschool2009@nbi.dk. Due to the limitations of the NBI lecture halls and NBIA office space, we expect to be able to accept ~30 participants. All registrations are to subject approval by the organizing committee.

The NBIA does not charge a registration fee for the school, but generally cannot cover travel and accommodation (see the accommodation page where we list a number of hotels for which we have obtained special block rates). Financial support for a limited number of school participants is available upon request.

CompSchool2009 is made possibly by support from the Danish Astrophysics Research School, The Danish National Space Institute (DTU Space), the Dark Cosmology Centre at the Niels Bohr Institute, and the Niels Bohr International Academy.
CompSchool2009 is organized in coordination with the MICRA2009 workshop on Microphysics in Computational Relativistic Astrophysics which takes place at the NBI the week after the School (Aug 24 - 28, 2009). Participants of the School may consider attending the MICRA2009 Workshop as well.
