Title: Extreme matter at the corners of the QCD phase diagram

Speaker: Professor Raimond Snellings (Nikhef & Utrecht University)

Abstract:

The way matter behaves at extreme conditions of temperature, pressure and magnetic field is governed by quantum chromodynamics (QCD). However, QCD is still the least understood understood ingredient of the standard model of particle physics and in particular working out how large numbers of quarks interact under extreme conditions of density, temperature, and magnetic fields has proven to be extremely challenging.

In this presentation I will talk about the study, of the hot and dense quark gluon plasma created in collisions at the LHC and of merging neutrons stars as observed in LIGO/Virgo,  we are doing in the recently founded institute for gravitational and subatomic physics (GRASP) in Utrecht.
