Description

The talk would start with a survey of analytical methods for the two-body problem in GR, more specifically the inspiral of two compact objects and the gravitational waves that they generate. The non-relativistic decomposition of Einstein’s gravitational field and the use of Feynman diagrams will be highlighted. The larger part of the talk would be devoted to recent progress on a statistical solution for the Newtonian three-body problem. This is a deep, long-standing and fruitful open problem in physics, a prototype of a chaotic system. The talk shall describe an exact reduction of the solution, obtained using tools of a high-energy theorist, together with evidence from computer simulations.
