Presentation Techniques for Assistant Professors, Post-docs, and advanced PhD-students

Event

The Niels Bohr International Academy (NBIA) invites Assistant Professors, post-doctoral researchers, and advanced PhD students at The Niels Bohr Institute to a 3-hour workshop focusing on presentation techniques for interviews and talks. This workshop will teach participants to present themselves with confidence and clarity at seminars, job talks, and panel interviews. The workshop will conclude with informal discussions over lunch, provided by NBIA.

Venue

The event will be held in Auditorium A on Blegdamsvej 17 on Friday, October 4, 9:00 AM - 1:30 PM (lunch and coffee breaks included)

Program

Mark Harvey Simpson will run the main part of the workshop. Mark is a communication consultant and CEO at GlobalDenmark. Mark has over 20 years of experience in helping researchers to present themselves with authority and authenticity, and to create relevance for their audience.  Mark will explore the basic elements of an effective presentation and work on the following issues:

• Rhetorical devices: priming, framing and sealing one’s key points
• Using one’s voice and body language
• Creating relevance, authority and authenticity
• Creating an effective structure
• Visual aids: how to use them and what to avoid
• English for presentations - useful phrases
• Dealing with questions

Participants will receive GlobalDenmark's digital toolbox on effective presentation techniques.

Martin Pessah will give a complementary presentation on "The Do's and Don'ts of Scientific Presentations" based on his experience giving talks at and running seminars, colloquia, and interviews. Martin is the Deputy Director of NBIA and is co-PI in the EU COFUND INTERACTIONS Programme at NBIA. He will cover the following topics:

• Understanding the goal of your talk
• Writing good titles and abstracts
• Knowing your audience
• Designing good slides
• Delivering your message
• Wrapping up your talk
