General
This Elite PhD course in Copenhagen will give PhD students and other interested researchers a state-of-the-art introduction to a number of recent exciting topics in gravity and string theory. In particular, the course is intended for PhD students and other researchers working in theoretical high energy physics, cosmology and mathematics, but one of the courses (see below) may also be interesting for those working in the area of theoretical condensed matter physics.
The school is organized by the Theoretical Particle Physics and Cosmology Group and the Niels Bohr International Academy at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. The course is also an event of the Geometry and Mathematical Physics School (GEOMAPS)
The deadline for registration is September 21 .
Participation in the school is free.
There is no financial support available but for participants outside Copenhagen there is information on affordable accomodation possibilities on this page .
Scientific Programme
External lecturers
Harvey Reall (Cambridge University): Higher-dimensional gravity
Simon Ross (Universiy of Durham): Applied AdS/CFT: hydrodynamics and condensed matter systems
Local lecturers
Niels Obers: Brane mechanics, fluid dynamics and black holes
(TBA)
For abstracts of the lectures see the Scientific Programme page in the menu. See also the tentative timetable (subject to minor changes)
Format
The format of the school consists of two 2-hour lectures daily (morning and afternoon), with exercise sessions in some of the late afternoons. On each day there will be a 20 min. coffee break during the morning lectures and the afternoon lectures. This will provide an extra opportunity for instructors and students to interact.
Dinner
A dinner for all participants will be organised on Thursday evening. Please indicate in the registration form whether you would like to participate in the dinner.
