Getting to HCØ

The airport is situated approximately 6 miles south of the HCØ Institute on the island of Amager. The cheapest way to reach the institute from the airport is to take the metro from the airport station (Lufthavnen) to Norreport station. From there you can take the 6A bus (which comes every few minutes) heading north-west and get off at Frederik Bajers Plads. It is then just a 5 minute walk to the HCØ Institute following the route that is shown on the map below. For this you will need to buy a ticket from the airport metro station / travel centre. A single ticket costs 36 DKK (6 CHF) and a "klippekort" (valid for 10 trips) costs 200 DKK (33 CHF). For more information see the public transport section below. The entire journey should take about 40 minutes.

You can also take a taxi from directly outside the airport but be aware that they are expensive! The journey usually costs around 300 DKK (50 CHF) and takes about 30 minutes. Most taxis will accept credit cards and receipts will be provided on request.

Public Transport

In Copenhagen a single ticket will allow you to travel on the bus, metro, train and harbour bus as many times as you like within a designated zone and a fixed period of time (usually one hour). The price of the ticket depends on how many zones you need to pass through in order to get to your destination. If you know that you will need to make multiple trips during your stay it is cheaper and more convenient to buy a (10 ticket) “klippekort”. This is a pre-paid travel card that you punch-in every time you make a trip. The card is stamped with the date and time and is then valid for the next hour. A 2 zone ticket/klippekort is usually sufficient for travelling around the city but if you also need to travel to and from the airport then you will need a 3 zone ticket/klippekort. Additional information about the public transport and the different ticket options can be found here and here, respectively.

Cycling
Cycling is one of the most popular methods of getting around in Copenhagen. There are many bike shops all over the city, a large number of which have bikes to rent - especially in the Nørrebro area. If you are interested in renting a bike for the week a recommendation would be Luka's Cykler, which is a 15 minute walk from the HCØ Institute. Here you will be able to rent a decent bike for approximately 50 DKK (9 CHF) per day. It is open from 10am to 6pm and usually has around 10 to 15 bikes available. For an even cheaper alternative you could borrow one of the free city bikes that are used within limited areas of Copenhagen. The bikes can be freed from one of the bike stands by inserting a 20 DKK coin into the bike. The 20 DKK acts as a deposit that you will get back when you return the bike to one of the bike stands. This map shows the areas in which you are permitted to cycle with these bikes and the location of the bike stands.
